  1. Great idea but so far the only change I see is that the address bar adds #data as a suffix to the post title .No fancybox popup displays ;pop-ups are not disabled in my browser.
I did notice that the fancybox css in the plugin editor shows one area where the width and height are both zero. The initial fancybox loading is indicated as 40px wide and the full window is 480. Yet in another of your plugin files it indicates 800px wide ‚which it should be as a pop-up for better readability if the font size is increased to 16 or 18 px.

    • Piotr S. pisze:

      It works since 0.1-alpha2. ;)

Remember that is still alpha, so it can’t work properly - i.e. there is no p tag support.

    Hi,

Yes this is a great idea and I will be following its development :)

As this topic is something that interests me, I also found that fixed width fonts are more readable, so you may want to try that in future releases. Another suggestion would be to play with different text and background colors, and finally, you could think of translating it to other languages (I can help with Spanish).

Have a nice day and thanks for this plugin, regards!

  3. There are no instructions which explain how to enable the popup window for a post. What commands or actions are required to get the pop-up window to display? How do you select the text to be displayed?

    • Piotr S. pisze:

Just click on ‘Readability’ below post or page title. Like on this blog.

      • Mario pisze:

where is that? what to click? where are instrucions? how does it work? anything! i installed it and what now? control panel is werry poor, it offers Link title: and Min word count to activate and save.
Pliz send me instrucions to my mail. thx

        • Piotr S. pisze:

You should see ‘Readability’ on every single one post/page. Click this activates readable mode.

    • Piotr S. pisze:

      Dzięki za miłe słowa. ;)
Odnośnie sugestii - jak sobie wyobrażasz “wybieranie” danego fragmentu i kto miałby go dokonywać? Autor bloga, czytelnik, czy może wtyczka - zupełnie losowo?

  5. Tadeusz M pisze:

    Pozdrawiam

  6. Hi,
This WordPress extension is a great idea ! Congratulations.

Unfortunately, there is a bug regarding multilingual WordPress sites.
My site is bilingual: English & French. When your extension is used by a viewer, the window will systematically show the two versions of the text : always French first, then the English one (disrespectful of what language is the original page).

    Hope this is userful. Regards.

    • Piotr S. pisze:

      Hi,

It’s so interesting case. How you made your webblog bilingual? Plugin or other way? If first one, I hope that you can share with me plugin name, so I can do something with this mess.

      • As many others, I use the qTranslate extension http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/qtranslate/ http://www.qianqin.de/qtranslate/
This extension seems to add codes to a post permitting to distinguish between languages and then help WordPress to screen the content only one language at a time, almost as if distinct web sites.

        • I download and installed the new version 0.1-beta8.
It now shows only the title of the post, not the post itself.

Thus, I had no choice but to disable the extension.

          • Piotr S. pisze:

It’s so weird, cause since a few days there is no really new code, which can completely destroy this plugin for you.

In addition, it works on my weblog, but I will try to solve it.

//Are you sure that you have PHP 5.x?
Try to remove lines from 86 to 93 in readability.php and let me know if it works then.

  7. It’s working great now, thank you.I had to remove it from loading in certain pages that are shortcode dependent like the included Forum and the buddypress area. For other pages and posts it works better than I could have hoped for.
PS: I’m Bartholomew John not John Bartholomew.

    • Piotr S. pisze:

There will be possibility to turn it off on pages and posts by name, slug or ID. In addition, I think about not to show Readability when post has less than x words. Actually x is const (defined as 100), but soon it will be matter of plugin settings.

  8. And sorry about not answering in Polish.I was a child when I came from Austria.

  9. violacase pisze:

Line 86 in readability.php uses an absolute path to typography stuff.
    This is an error.
WordPress installed in another map then standard (i.e.:http://) generates a file not found error.

    • Piotr S. pisze:

Line 86 refers to wp-admin/includes/plugin.php, not to PHP Typography, but it’s fixed in beta8. I hope it works.

  10. violacase pisze:

Is it hard for you to restrict comments to English language only?
I think most developers are familiar with the technical issues written in English.
I really can’t make any coffee of the Polish comments. That’s a pitty because I would like to help.

    • Piotr S. pisze:

I don’t want to do it. Of course devs usually are familiar with English, but these comments aren’t only for programmers, but for my another readers too (and as you see this weblog is mostly in Polish).

  11. Ron pisze:

Great I like the idea. Not useable for me at the moment since most of my links have some code in it. (show-hide , popup window , ect) and it interfers with those codes.
I think the next step should be that in the settings you can select for which post/page ID you want it to work and ignore the rest.

It is on deactivated now, waiting for updates and see where it goes.
    5 stars from me though

  12. ashok pisze:

It’s a great plug-in idea, and I love the look of the “readable” posts it generates.

Unfortunately, it does not do well with blockquotes, which my site tends to use a lot of. Is this an issue on my end? I’m running Firefox 4.

    • Piotr S. pisze:

It looks like Readability has no blockquote in its CSS. I’ll fix it in next release.

      Thanks for your report.

      • ashok pisze:

No problem - I’m running Readability on my site now, I think it’s a wonderful idea, and I’ll promote it soon.

  13. ashok pisze:

Also: I just noticed, while looking over another blog entry: how does Readbility do with bullet points? It seems to ignore them entirely on my site.

    • Piotr S. pisze:

      Should works with 0.1.2. :)

      • ashok pisze:

I just noticed: thank you again! What were the improvements for 0.1.3?

        • Piotr S. pisze:

Fix for images wider than 650px. Actually they should be auto scaled (but it works only with web browsers newer than IE6 :)).

PS Thank you for your recommendation on your weblog.

          • ashok pisze:

It’s no problem. Let me know if the publicity actually translated into a few downloads more.

I’m always looking for things to make my entries more readable. My prose is dense and I work on difficult issues. The least I can do is find things that don’t force people to squint at the screen and deliver the message in big, beautiful fonts.

          • Piotr S. pisze:

Erm… I guess you mean “transformed”, not “translated”. :) iPhone’s auto correction? :)

You can check easily if your post has influence for Readability’s download here. I think a little, but generally it isn’t popular plugin (instead of my second one ;)).

  14. rav pisze:

Very nice plugin. Quick question, how to place social links or rating in the popup window?? Appreciated. Thank you

    • Piotr S. pisze:

I guess it’s impossible actually. Readability gets only post content and nothing more to keep ‘readabled’ article clean.

  15. Frank pisze:

    Hi,

I’ve seen your plugin and when installed in my local machine, it works wonderfully, but when uploaded to a live site, it displays the webpage again, exactly as the original.

Have I missed something? I would really like to use it, so please let me know. Have a nice weekend :)

    Hi there!

I’m using your plugin for a client’s website. Great plugin! Love the simple elegance.

Here’s a slight problem I have: I noticed that in some cases, coding will appear in the readability pop-up window. Often it is the photo captions which appear as text in form of [caption id= etc etc].

How can I fix this? Any tips would be great… Thanks!

    add_option(‘readability_link_title’, ‘Readability’);

    to something else

    add_option(‘readability_link_title’, ‘Readability Rocks’);

No Luck! Any ideas would be appreciated.
